BCO Coastal Gems: Broughton Archipelago and Area

The Broughton Archipelago is a collection of islands and waterways off the north-eastern coast of Vancouver Island, between Vancouver Island and the mainland. It encompasses dozens of islets and islands, collectively brought together into the Broughton Archipelago Provincial Park. Many people refer to the area in general (not just the park) as the Broughton Archipelago, or the Broughtons.

The park was established in 1992, however the region has long been known by boaters and kayakers as a wonderful place to explore. It has also long been known as an excellent place to see whales and other marine wildlife.

Many of the communities around the area provide services into the Broughtons, such as whale watching, fishing and kayaking tours. There are also a number of floating lodges and marinas tucked in to the waterways and islands.

Whether exploring from a base such as Telegraph Cove, Sointula or Alert Bay, or taking a multi-day boating trip in the region, the Broughton Archipelago will amaze and delight any outdoor adventurer.

BCO Coastal Gems: Telegraph Cove

Telegraph Cove is a name that is familiar to many people, but not as many people know where it is located and what really is there. It has made a name for itself as one of the premier whale watching destinations in BC, and offers visitors whale watching tours and a whale museum.

But there is so much more at Telegraph Cove. The small community is built around a historic boardwalk that was at one time part of a fishing and cannery village in that location. Visitors can stay in small accommodations right on the boardwalk, where you will find a coffee shop and the natural museum alongside historic buildings and artifacts from bygone days.

There are two marinas and RV parks in Telegraph Cove, as well as private rentals and homes. The area is the launch point for many whale watching businesses, as it is located close to the Robson Bight ecological reserve where orca whales are frequent visitors.

Telegraph Cove is approximately 210 km north of Campbell River and just south of Port McNeill, on the east coast of Vancouver Island

BCO Adventures: Alder Bay

One of the joys of living on the coast is exploring the many different areas where one can enjoy the outdoors. Over the Canada Day long week-end Shelley and her family had the opportunity to go experience the delights of Alder Bay and the waters of Broughton Strait.

 

Alder Bay Resort is just south of Port McNeill outside Telegraph Cove on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The resort has 90 sites, including some tent sites, and has all the amenities one would like to find at a private RV resort. It also has a marina with fish cleaning facilities, perfect for the family up fishing!

The waters around Alder Bay provide ever changing opportunities for exploration as well as some excellent fishing.
